A collection of video and photographic works was brought together in Performance Portraits to explore the ways in which artists navigate and challenge conventions commonly found in portraiture and performance-based works. Many of the works use the duration-based medium of video to explore both the constructed and real experiences of time passing, as well as the relationship of the camera to its subject.
Works from the Chartwell Collection which were featured in the exhibition included Campbell Patterson’s enduring series Lifting my mother for as long as I can (2006 – 2015) and Yvonne Todd’s video work Denim Seagull (2013).
