Cross Currents: Contemporary New Zealand and Australian Art from the Chartwell Collection was held at the Waikato Museum of Art and History in 1991. It featured 97 works and was curated by Ken Orchard and Linda Tyler. The exhibition took place a year before the Chartwell Collection was formally moved to the Waikato Museum, where it remained until 1996. Artists featured in Cross Currents included Ian Fairweather, Richard Killeen, Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri, Arthur Boyd, Jean Horsley, and Jacqueline Fraser, among many others.
In the foreword to the exhibition catalogue, Waikato Museum’s then-Director Bruce M. Robinson writes, “[The strength of The Chartwell Collection] lies in its dedication to expressionist art produced on both sides of the Tasman. The artists represented have either determinedly stayed and worked in their home land or have exchanged working environments, permanently or temporarily, remaining astutely aware of their origins while open to influence from either country and the world at large.” This exhibition, Robinson concludes, “seeks to examine these cross currents within the confines of the works held in this unique and extensive collection.”
