In keeping with Patterson’s early video performances, these simple actions were made with easily accessible materials, and often depicting the artist caught comically in a compromising position. Here the artist is caught trapped in a fold-out bed in a student flat, tasked with exiting and removing his body from this location and problem. It’s length is based on the real-time action, and how long it took Patterson to solve the problem of extracting himself. Seen in clusters or in isolation, these works are both comic as they are poignant expressions of youth and nihilistic response to the future requirements of production and occupation.
