Chartwell Notes
"This is a series of sculptures that I’m developing over time. It’s kind of like my own personal orchestra. It’s based on the Balinese gamelan - my father is from Bali. Traditionally each village would have its own gamelan orchestra each with a slightly different pitch so you couldn’t take one instrument from a village and play it in another…"
"I was really drawn to this idea of place being inscribed or described through sound, community and history. This orchestra was my way of creating place… my own sense of place… Each instrument is developed for different shows and named after somebody.”
- Sriwhana Spong in conversation with David Roberts Art Foundation curator Ned McConnell, May 2020.
