Being

Creative visual thinking is fundamental to us all as human beings as we strive to understand our sense of self and the world. Chartwell seeks to deepen understanding about the importance of art and creative thinking for our future and our wellbeing.

Seeing

Chartwell is an explorer of the visual world. We want to know more about how and what we see. When both the eye and the mind are active, the creative process opens to the artist and viewer. The Chartwell Collection provides the viewer many examples of creative visual thought in action.

Making

Chartwell supports artists as they make and think. Making is an active and connected process, involving the interaction of intention, intuition and intellect with the mediums of the world. Chartwell is making too - making a difference through philanthropy and enabling access to creative activities and research.

Thinking

Chartwell encourages everyone to think about art and the creative process with a commitment to drive an understanding about the significance of the visual arts to general creative thinking. We share a curiosity to know and learn more: an imaginative, ongoing investigation.

You are invited to attend a Creative Professional Development Workshop called Squiggla - Bringing arts back into the classroom.

Developed by the Chartwell Trust and supported by Te Rito Toi and the Creative Thinking Project, Squiggla is an arts based learning resource that exercises the creative mind through mark making. As a way to introduce embodied learning, Squiggla provides a platform for introducing new pedagogies and fostering non-cognitive skills in the whole curriculum.

This session will:

Introduce ways to encourage free creative thinking to a general or visual arts classroom using non judgmental mark making.
Equip teachers, including those not trained in the visual arts, who recognise the value of creativity, with simple exercises for all students to do with minimal preparation, inexpensive materials and readily available digital devices.
Highlight the natural inclinations of learners towards play, creativity, collaboration and inquiry.
Demonstrate ways to get into joyful mark making, to share and collaborate, record and upload Squigglaworks using Squiggla.org

Squiggla is a tool that recognises that creative thinking is important for everyone. It is especially designed for those who aren’t ‘artists’ by moving away from the language of ‘art’ or ‘representational drawing.’

This workshop has been developed in response to the call from teachers and educators for more creative resources in classrooms as they are often steered away from the visual arts and face new challenges following Covid-19.

This Creative Professional Development workshop will be presented by the co-developers of Squiggla: Karen Gardiner (a Chartwell Trustee and intermediate teacher) and Sue Gardiner from The Chartwell Trust.

We encourage registrations from teachers at all levels – Materials supplied + no experience needed!

Date: Thursday 29 October, 5-7pm.

Venue: Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery, Learning Centre, 420 Titirangi Road.
