  • Where

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki

  • When

    1 December 1996 - 1 February 1997

This was the first of a series of survey exhibitions at the Auckland Art Gallery which signalled the arrival of the Chartwell Collection at the Auckland Art Gallery. Director Chris Saines wrote the introduction to the accompanying catalogue.

The first exhibition set out to signal the diversity of the Collection, which had until then been primarily characterised as having a central focus on expressionist works. This survey, curated by William McAloon examined notions of self through the work of Australian and New Zealand artists including Davida Allen, Mikala Dwyer, Dale Frank, Jeffrey Harris, Giovanni Intra, Mick Namerari Tjapaltjarri, John Nixon, Mike Parr, Seraphine Pick, John Reynolds and Tony Tuckson.
