The Promised Land spanned over two decades of lauded contemporary New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai’s art career, from 1989 – 2015.

New site-specific works were paired with loans from New Zealand and Australian collections to showcase Parekowhai’s playful and quirky style which comments on popular culture blended with colonial history. A mixture of art-historical humour, colonial narratives and New Zealand cultural references were brought together to create an exciting foray into the artist’s practice.

The Chartwell Trust was a proud sponsor of this landmark exhibition. Works from the Chartwell Collection made an important contribution to the show.
