    Dunedin Public Art Gallery

    7 August 2021 - 14 November 2021

With a multi-disciplinary practice spanning drawing, painting, poetry, photography and film, Joanna Margaret Paul (1945-2003) was an important and pioneering artist of her generation. Imagined in the context of a room considers the resonance and legacy of Paul’s work in the contemporary moment.

This major exhibition presents a close study of her career from the early 1970s to the early 2000s and is accompanied by a significant large-scale publication. Moving across the different phases of Paul’s life as an artist, the exhibition traces key journeys that shaped her career: from Ōtepoti Dunedin, to Banks Peninsula to Whanganui and beyond; between the landscape and the interior; the mind, body and spirit; between presence and absence.
