Chartwell Notes
The first acquisition of Elizabeth Newman’s work was her sophisticated fabric piece Untitled 2004, acquired from Melbourne-based gallery Neon Parc at the 2009 Auckland Art Fair. Untitled 2004 is a rectangular piece of suspended fabric, which the artist has dismantled with three cuts to create a window-like flap, revealing the wall behind. This simple gesture is clearly visible for the audience to see and understand, and it allows the audience to contemplate abstraction, materiality and craft histories as well as the physicality of the fabric in terms of how it drapes, its weight, the invitation to be aware of the tactile and depth of colour. In a context of Australian art history, there are engaging allusions to Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series. (RW, 2014)
