Description
Susan Te Kahurangi King is the first New Zealand artist to present an exhibition at New York’s American Folk Art Museum (21 January–27 May 2018). This project followed major exhibitions in Sydney, Paris, Miami and London.
King has been described as a folk and an outsider artist, terms applied to artists who are have never undertaken art tuition and are therefore self-trained. Despite undertaking no formal training, King’s eloquent drawings are graphically complex and reveal an astonishing skill at communicating visually. The artist’s earlier compositions indicate her wide-ranging knowledge of animated cartoons, such as those produced by Walt Disney for the cinema.
