Chartwell Notes
American-born Winston Roeth’s painting Mockingbird was acquired from the exhibition Firefly at FoxJenson Gallery in 2014, which also featured smaller gridded works by Roeth and the colour-field paintings of Leigh Martin.
Mockingbird brings together the history of the grid and colour-field painting within contemporary modernist art, and adds to the potential of such works reflected within the Collection by New Zealand artists such as Matt Henry, John Nixon, and Milan Mrkusich. Mockingbird is the only painting by Roeth in a public collection in New Zealand; the acquisition of this work provides an exciting opportunity to reveal Roeth’s practice to the Auckland Art Gallery’s audience.
