Modern Letters 1, a 2017 work by Tony de Latour from the Chartwell Collection, was included in the major exhibition US V THEM: Tony de Lautour in 2018 at the Christchurch Art Gallery. Now the exhibition tours to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, opening on 11 May 2019 and on show until 6 October 2019.
Acquired from Ivan Anthony Gallery, Auckland, in 2017, Moderns Letters 1 is part of a larger series of geometric abstractions that formulate de Latour’s visual language of marks – he sets up a dialogue across the surface where marks, forms and colours interact with each other like a form of coding or destabilised grammar system. The playful interaction of lines, dots and geometric forms create a compositional energy that is contained by the unexpected informality of an op-shop frame.
