Making

Chartwell supports artists as they make and think. Making is an active and connected process, involving the interaction of intention, intuition and intellect with the mediums of the world. Chartwell is making too - making a difference through philanthropy and enabling access to creative activities and research.

Noel Ivanoff

Noel Ivanoff (b. Lower Hutt, Aotearoa New Zealand) completed a certificate in advanced studies (postgraduate) at St Martins School of Art in London (1986) and Master of Fine Arts (1st class honours) at Elam School of Fine Arts (1999). In his work, Ivanoff focuses on the structures and supports on which paintings are made, locating his work in contemporary discourse concerning the three dimensionality of painting. Seeking to open-up the space left between post-painterly abstraction and minimalism, the work aims to find a socially grounded resonance for physical gesture and materiality within painting, connecting abstraction more emphatically to the everyday world of utilitarian action and labour.

Ivanoff has exhibited widely in New Zealand, The UK, Europe, Japan and Australia. Recent exhibitions include WestFarbe: paint vs colour. (2016 – 18, Germany) Curated by Christoph Dahlhausen, Precise Operations (2013, Belgium) and Open Systems (2017, Belgium), both curated by Alex Kennedy. Works by Noel Ivanoff are held in the The Chartwell Trust Collection, the Fletcher Trust Collection and the James Wallace Arts trust Collection. Noel is a senior lecturer at Whitecliffe College.
