Creative visual thinking is fundamental to us all as human beings as we strive to understand our sense of self and the world. Chartwell seeks to deepen understanding about the importance of art and creative thinking for our future and our wellbeing.

Seeing

Chartwell is an explorer of the visual world. We want to know more about how and what we see. When both the eye and the mind are active, the creative process opens to the artist and viewer. The Chartwell Collection provides the viewer many examples of creative visual thought in action.

Chartwell supports artists as they make and think. Making is an active and connected process, involving the interaction of intention, intuition and intellect with the mediums of the world. Creative Matters Podcast: Sue and Karen Gardiner - The Chartwell Trust

Creative Matters Podcast host, Mandy Jakich, talks to Sue and Karen Gardiner as the Chartwell Collection celebrates the 50th anniversary of involvement with and support for the visual arts in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Karen and Sue discuss how the Chartwell Collection came to be, the importance of collecting and supporting contemporary art, and the impact of slow-looking. They also discuss Chartwell's outreach project, Squiggla, a tool that helps develop creative thinking through the power of mark making https://www.squiggla.org.

Sue shares some highlights of the Chartwell anniversary programme (March 2024 - March 2025) and Chartwell's hopes for the next 50 years!

Mandy Jakich has a background in education, art education and community arts and is a multi-media artist. She is the founder and CEO of Creative Matters, an award winning art education business founded in 2015.
