Seen from Elsewhere considered New Zealand artists who have drawn international, historical and cultural connections into their work, situating their practices in the post-modern age of the 21st century. Through artworks which generate critical thought on the world around us using both wry humour and political commentary, these artists aim to subvert and connect to New Zealand art’s relationship to the world.

From the Chartwell Collection, Michael Parekowhai’s giant kitset Kiss the Baby Goodbye (1994) riffs on the famous koru paintings of modern New Zealand artist Gordon Walters, while Imants Tillers’ Paradiso (1994) fragments and blends New Zealand art historical references in an acknowledgement of the cultural and physical dislocation experienced by his refugee parents.
