This was the third in a series of survey exhibitions tracking recent acquisitions in the Chartwell Collection at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. Curated by Allan Smith, Eloquent Polarities marked 25 years of collecting by Chartwell. As Chris Saines, Director, wrote at the time: “ Chartwell has established an increasingly important place in New Zealand’s visual cultural life. Its work is being continuously renewed by an always lively dialogue between contemporary art and its audience.”

With a focus on investigations into black and white, Smith included works by Kathy Temin, Brent Harris, Julian Dashper, Richard Thompson, Shane Cotton, Simon Morris, Bill Culbert and Denise Kum. “They have been chosen for their monochromatic simplicity, for the eloquent chic of their chromatic ascesis,” Smith wrote.
