Mostyn Bramley-Moore

Born in Wollongong NSW in 1952, artist and academic Mostyn Bramley-Moore began his engagement with art at the University of Sydney in the 1970s where he majored in Fine Arts and attended studio classes at the Tin Sheds. He went on to complete his Master of Fine Arts in painting at Pratt institute in New York and his PhD in Fine Art at RMIT. Bramley-Moore has held teaching positions at the Victorian College of the Arts, Southern Cross University and Queensland College of Art where he has taught for many years. His work is held in NGA, NGV, QAG and Artbank, as well as many regional galleries.

Bramley-Moore’s practice encompasses painting, drawing and collage. His works are often gestural and expressive and are informed by recent life experiences and memory. Bramley-Moore refutes the notion that his works are ‘abstract’, stating that, ‘I cannot recall ever starting a work with purely formal, painterly goals in mind. I’m always motivated by fascinations, stories, particular places, and so on.’ Over the past forty years Bramley-Moore has developed a nuanced visual language where he compiles imagery, colour and text to form works that take the viewer on a journey through his personal experience.
