Gordon Bennett (1955 – 2014) was an Australian artist of Aboriginal and Anglo-Celtic descent. Born in Monto, Queensland, Bennett was a significant figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art. Bennett is internationally acclaimed as one of Australia’s most significant and critically engaged contemporary artists. Bennett’s art engages with historical and contemporary questions of cultural and personal identity, with a specific focus on Australia’s colonial past and its postcolonial present.
Bennett's work has been exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. His solo exhibitions span Brisbane, Hamilton (Canada), Melbourne, Perth, Utrecht, and Vancouver. He has also been shown in group exhibitions in Berlin, Kassel (Germany), London, Melbourne, Rivoli-Torino (Italy), and Sydney. His work is held in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
