Chartwell Notes

Imi Knoebel’s painting AAMIII was purchased from the exhibition Paperworks at the FoxJenson gallery in February 2014. German-born Knoebel is an internationally influential painter who has bridged European and American modernist practices. This work encapsulates several aspects of Knoebel’s practice, including the focus on colour and pattern, the juxtaposition of lighter and deeper hues, symmetry and asymmetry and contrasting surface characters. Integral to the history of the Chartwell Collection is a longstanding inquiry into the significant issues which have shaped, and continue to shape painting ideas. The acquisition of Knoebel’s AAMIII reflects a respect for modernist influenced artworks and their significance in both a contemporary and historical context. It adds to the Collection’s substantial representation of modernist influenced painting. (RW, 2014)
