Chartwell Notes

“The life drawing project was started in San Francisco back in 2010." For an interview on the project, and other work made during an artists residency at Headlands in San Francisco, see this linkMaloy explains that he invited professional life models to draw him... reversing the role of the artist and model/muse in the Life Drawing Class.

The work was first shown at Sue Crockford Gallery, Auckland, in the exhibition Christian Jankowski, Richard Maloy, Sriwhana Spong, 29 June - 16 July 2011.

 Rebecca Ward writes:

In keeping with Maloy’s practice, Studies of an Artist discusses ideas around the education and making components of an art school environment and questions our understanding of the maker. For this body of work, Maloy reversed the iconic traditions of the life class and artist-model relationship which were paramount to European and historical art school training. As a reflection of his own art-school experiences, Maloy sat as the model in a life drawing class, requesting the models draw him. The process of acquisition included Maloy validating an alternative form of installation for these drawings within the Chartwell Collection. The drawings may be displayed in a circle, to mimic the circular orientation of the typical life drawing class. (RW, 2014)
