John Reynolds

One of New Zealand's pre-eminent painters and printmakers, Reynolds’ practice is diverse and incorporates sculpture, installation, publications, documentaries and fashion (Karen Walker, World, Workshop). His paintings are a proliferation of art historical, literary, religious, architectural (including plans, charts and sketches) and philosophical references that interconnect the heroic with the ordinary. Reynolds’ early work is primarily focused on large abstract colour-fields, later permeated by structural imagery and texts. His site specific outdoor works include Snow Tussock and Golden Spaniard in East Otago, and Big Wave Territory, commissioned by New Plymouth’s Art in Public Places Trust for their Coastal Walkway.

John Reynolds was born in 1956 and has lived and worked in Auckland throughout his career. He is a two-time finalist of the Walters Prize Award and exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki (2002 and 2008) and he received a Laureate Award from the Arts Foundation of New Zealand.
