Dani Marti

Dani Marti

WS-S#2

extruded polypropylene

1998

This work was acquired for the collection from the exhibition WS-S# at Room 35, Gitte Weiss Gallery, Sydney in 1999. It was shown at the Auckland Art Gallery from 14 September 2002 - 9 February 2003  as part of a small survey show called Recent Contemporary Acquisitions. Artists represented included Yuk King Tan, Michael Tuffery, Dani Marti, Niki Hastings-McFall, Terry Urbahn, Rueben Patterson and Elizabeth Thomson.

Composed from textured artifical fibres, the work is a woven wall panel that also operates as a minimalist construction. While it draws on craft based traditions, it also links with new technologies- specifically the interlocking information highway and the digital world of pixels presented on a flickering screen.

Described by Victoria Hynes, the deputy editor of Australian Art Review, as being like oversized fabric swatches, the work reflects Marti's interests in weaving, fabric patterning, and drapery.

" Weaving his ropes with the dexterity and passion of a painter wielding his brush, artist Dani Marti creates sensuous textile-based works that also operate as abstract sculptural reliefs."

The artist most recently exhibited at Sherman Galleries, Sydney, in March 2004, with an exhibition titled Looking for Rover, a tribute to the Aboriginal artist Rover Thomas. For more go to Sherman Galleries.
