Split Level View Finder: Theo Schoon and New Zealand Art

City Gallery Wellington, Open until November 3 2019

Done up in pins and curlers, Theo Schoon, oil and ink on paper, 610 x 480mm, Chartwell Collection, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, purchased 2013.

Seven Theo Schoon works from the Chartwell Collection feature in the new 'Split Level View Finder: Theo Schoon and New Zealand Art' exhibition at City Gallery Wellington. Just opened, and free to visit until the 3rd of November 2019.

This show is the first comprehensive survey of Schoon's work since the 1980s and presents his diverse oeuvre of painting, drawings, graphics, photography, jade and gourd carving. Schoon's interest in indigenous forms and Māori art were integral to the development of New Zealand modern art practice, and join a dialogue with artists such as Gordon Walters.

In the artists' own words, "To hell with making art. What you do is experiment. What that experiment leads to is quite inconsequential. The only thing it leads to is knowledge."
